Israel Air Force Trains in Greece, Lands Helicopters on Mount Olympus

The air force was practicing flying over mountainous terrain – the kind of exercise it used to do in Turkey.

Israeli helicopter squadrons trained in Greece over the past two weeks and practiced landing on mountains – including Mount Olympus, the country’s highest elevation.
The helicopters, Sikorsky CH-53s and UH-60 Black Hawks, known in the Israeli miltiary as "Yasour" and "Yanshuf" respectively, returned to Israel on Thursday after the joint exercise – the kind of drill Israel used to do in Turkey before relations between the two countries soured.
The air force sent twice the number of crews needed to fly to Greece to give many crew members the chance to train under different conditions. Israeli Hercules transport planes and Beechcraft King Air light planes also took part.
The flight to Greece was a long one for the helicopters, about seven hours. Lt. Col. Gilad, the 124th Squadron commander whose last name may not be revealed, said the conditions were special.
“These are field conditions that we don’t run into in Israel,” the officer said. “We only have Mount Hermon, and there are mountains there that simulate countries where maybe we’lSchermata 2016 09 26 alle 08.43.36l land someday.”
The air force’s cooperation with the Greeks is extensive; Israelis, for example, take part in the Greek air force’s annual exercise. A senior Israeli officer described the cooperation as “strategic” and said the two countries had “shared interests – military and economic.”
In the past, Turkey was where Israeli pilots would practice encountering unknown territory.
“Without a doubt, this is a change from what we did at the time in Turkey, where I remember spending a lot of time a decade ago,” Gilad said. “From our perspective, this was an excellent exercise – it expands our operational capabilities and makes us deal with things we don’t deal with on a day-to-day basis.”
During this month’s exercise, a Greek helicopter crashed.
In recent years, the Israeli air force has practiced flying in mountainous areas in other countries. In Romania in 2010, an Israeli CH-53 crashed in the Carpathian Mountains, killing all six Israeli crew members and a Romanian officer.

Video of the Week Israel votes to cut off power to Gaza.

Video: Allegations have come forth that Mahmoud Abbas (self proclaimed Palestinian "president") will - on top of asking israel to cut Gaza's power to one hour per day (just approved)now declare Gaza a rebel zone! This (if true) will mean the cutting of all aid to Gaza, the shut down of all bank accounts, stopping of all entry/exit and the international arrest warrants of Hamas officials... Calls for war have already been shouted from the rooftops with cuts to Gaza salaries by the PA, restrictions on diesel fuel (due to the PA refusing to pay), the electricity being cut down again and again (causing various problems for life in Gaza) but now it seems like the final nails are being ever so violently hammered into the coffin. If this rumour is true then conflict with Hamas is inevitable and "israel" will have the perfect excuse to massacre innocents in Gaza due to having a legal means to arrest Hamas members (who will not just hand themselves in obviously). Mahmoud Abbas is ready and willing to collectively punish the entire population of 2 million (mostly children) in the Gaza Strip in order to gain more power and to please his own oppressors. If the aid is stopped, the 80+ percent of Gazans reliant on international food aid will starve, 97% of the water in Gaza is also undrinkable, so with none coming in what's the alternative? The current conditions in Gaza would make any sane person cry and feel sick to the pit of their stomach and the so called president of Palestine is dancing around in his expensive suits licking the feet of his people's oppressors!!! Mahmoud Abbas has to go! This is disgusting! #SAVEGAZA
